Key Points

  • Diastasis recti (DR) is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, common after full-term pregnancies; separation over 2 finger-widths is considered DR.

  • Signs: Coning during crunches; untreated DR can lead to pelvic pain, incontinence, back pain, and weak core.

  • Solution: BirthCo.’s Defeat Diastasis rehab program specifically targets DR to restore core strength and function.

Diastasis recti is a condition where the rectus abdominis muscles separate and is very common in full term pregnancies. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles separate to accommodate growing baby - normal separation is 2 fingers or less. Any separation larger than 2 finger widths is considered DR. DR can result in "coning" appearance when doing a crunch. If left untreated it can cause postural issues such as pelvic pain, incontinence, back pain, and a chronically weak core. At BirthCo., we have a specifically designed rehab program called Defeat Diastasis that targets DR.
